How discount percentage works
A discount percentage tells you what fraction of the original price is being subtracted. Multiply the original price by the discount rate to find the savings, then subtract from the original to get the final price.
Example 1 (retail): A jacket costs $180 and is 30% off. $180 x 0.70 = $126 sale price. You save $54.
Example 2 (stacked discounts): A $200 item with 20% off, then an extra 10% off the sale price. First: $200 x 0.80 = $160. Second: $160 x 0.90 = $144. That is 28% total savings, not 30% -- stacked discounts multiply, they do not add.

Watch out for
Stacked discounts are not the same as adding the percentages. 20% off then 10% off equals 28% total savings, not 30%. Retailers use this intentionally because it sounds bigger than it is. Always calculate the final price.
