What Grade Do I Need on My Final Exam? The Math Explained Clearly

June 1, 2026

It is the last two weeks of the semester. You know your current grade, you know how much the final is worth, and you want to know what you actually need to score on the exam. This calculation causes more pre-finals anxiety than almost any other piece of math in a student's year -- and it is usually more reassuring than people expect once they actually do it.

The Formula

Required Final Exam Score = (Target Grade - (Current Grade x Weight of Work Done)) / Weight of Final

Where all values are expressed as decimals (divide percentages by 100).

Let us define the terms clearly:

  • Target Grade: The minimum grade you want in the course (e.g., 70% to pass, 80% to keep a scholarship)
  • Current Grade: Your grade on everything completed so far
  • Weight of Work Done: The percentage of the course that has been graded so far (1 minus the final's weight)
  • Weight of Final: How much the final exam counts toward your overall grade, as a decimal

Worked Example

You have a 74% going into finals. The final exam is worth 30% of your course grade. You need a 70% to pass the course.

Weight of work done: 1 - 0.30 = 0.70 (70% of the grade was already determined)

Required score: (0.70 - (0.74 x 0.70)) / 0.30

= (0.70 - 0.518) / 0.30

= 0.182 / 0.30

= 0.607 = 60.7%

You only need a 61% on the final to pass the course. That is almost certainly achievable, and knowing this number removes the vague dread of "I might fail" and replaces it with a specific, manageable target.

*A required score above 100% means the target grade is mathematically impossible given your current standing and the weight of the final.

What to Do If the Required Score Is Over 100%

If the math says you need 110% on your final to reach your target, the specific target is not achievable. This is useful information. It means you should either adjust your target (if passing at 70% rather than 80% is sufficient) or focus your energy on other courses rather than chasing an impossible outcome in this one.

It also opens a conversation: some professors offer extra credit, curve exams, or have policies about dropping the lowest quiz grades that could shift your current grade before the final calculation. Worth asking.

If Your Final Has Multiple Parts

If your final exam grade is itself made up of components -- multiple choice worth 60% of the final, essay worth 40% -- the same logic applies. Calculate the required total on the final first, then distribute that target across the components based on their weights.

Using This Strategically

Do not wait until the night before to run this calculation. Run it at week 10 of a 15-week semester. A 68% at mid-semester with a 25% final means you need about 80% on the final to reach a B -- that is a concrete goal to work toward over five weeks, not a panic calculation the night before.

Our Grade Calculator does this calculation automatically for any combination of current grade, final weight, and target grade.
