How to Calculate Your Grade Percentage: A Step-by-Step Guide

Grade percentage calculations come up constantly in school -- after every quiz, test, and assignment. Here is how to handle every common scenario, from a single raw score to a full semester calculation.

Converting a Raw Score to a Percentage

The basic formula: Grade % = (Points Earned / Points Possible) x 100

• You scored 43 out of 50: (43 / 50) x 100 = 86%
• You scored 78 out of 90: (78 / 90) x 100 = 86.7%
• You scored 112 out of 120: (112 / 120) x 100 = 93.3%

This same formula works for any point system regardless of the total.

Calculating Your Current Course Grade

Add up all points earned across every graded item, then divide by all points possible.

Example: Quiz 1: 17/20. Homework: 45/50. Test 1: 83/100. Project: 92/100.

Total earned: 17 + 45 + 83 + 92 = 237. Total possible: 20 + 50 + 100 + 100 = 270.

Grade: (237 / 270) x 100 = 87.8% -- a solid B+.

Weighted Grades

When your syllabus assigns different weights to different categories, calculate each category's average, then multiply by its weight.

Example weights: Tests 50%, Homework 25%, Participation 25%.

Your averages: Tests 79%, Homework 94%, Participation 100%.

Weighted grade: (0.50 x 79) + (0.25 x 94) + (0.25 x 100) = 39.5 + 23.5 + 25 = 88%. A B+.

The key insight: a high homework grade (94%) barely moves the needle because it only carries 25% weight. Tests matter most here.

What Score Do You Need on the Final?

Formula: Required Score = (Target Grade - Current Grade x (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight

Example: You have an 80% with a final exam worth 30% of your grade. You want an 85% overall.

Required = (0.85 - 0.80 x 0.70) / 0.30 = (0.85 - 0.56) / 0.30 = 0.29 / 0.30 = 96.7%

You need a 97% on the final to hit 85% overall. That tells you exactly what you're working toward.
